Step 4: Use the Pen Tool P to trace the outline. If you want to add colors to the path, you should close the path by connecting the first and last anchor points of a path. Step 5: Use the shape tool, pencil tool, or paintbrush to work on some details of the outline.

For example, the eyes can be traced using the Ellipse Tool to draw circles, and for the body part, we can use a paintbrush to add details. Delete the background layer and fix the details if needed.

You can edit the traced image and make it your own style. The easiest way to trace an image is using the Image Trace feature because the tracing result is preset and you can always adjust the result from the Image Trace panel. If you want to make big changes to the original image, you can use Method 2.

Your email address will not be published. Since I would like to trace the image and fill it with my own colors, I am going to convert the tracing into a Live Paint object. Open out the Layers panel. From the drop down menu choose Template. You will notice the image has become less visible dim. This is because we create this layer as a template for our artwork that we are about to do. Double click on the layer and change the dim percentage see below.

Create a new layer using the Create new layer button in the Layers panel. Double click on the new layer to open the Layer Options dialog box. To draw outlines of the figs, we would need a brush. We are using this brush for this tutorial, feel free to use any other brush or create your own brush if you like.

If you need to use a digital photo in your Illustrator document, you have to import it as a bitmap image. Even though you have to import digital photos as bitmap images, you may not have to leave them in that format inside of Illustrator. There are many instances where a vector-based representation of the photo is just what you need.

A tracing object is made up of two components: the original source image and the tracing result which is the vector artwork. By default, only the tracing result is visible. However, you can change the display of both the original image and the tracing result to best suit your needs. Click the Tracing Options Dialog button in the Control panel to view all tracing options.

Adjust the options, and click Trace. Make sure that the swatch library is open, and click the Tracing Options Dialog button in the Control panel. Select the swatch library name from the Palette menu, and click Trace.

Tracing presets provide pre-specified tracing options for specific types of artwork. All the tracing options change for optimal tracing of a technical drawing: color is set to black and white, blur is set to 0 px, stroke width is limited to 3 px, and so on.

Alternatively, select a tracing object, and click the Tracing Options Dialog button in the Control panel.

Set tracing options for the preset , and click Save Preset. Enter a name for the preset , and click OK. Click New , set tracing options for the preset , and click Done. Tip : To base a new preset on an existing preset, select the preset, and click New. Select the preset, and click Edit or Delete.

However, you can make an editable copy of a default preset by selecting the preset and clicking New. When you are satisfied with the results of a tracing, you can convert the tracing object to paths or to a Live Paint object. This final step allows you to work with the tracing as you do other vector artwork. Once you convert the tracing object, you can no longer adjust the tracing options.

Use this method if you want to work with the components of the traced artwork as individual objects. The resulting paths are grouped together. For example, if the display options are set to Outlines for the tracing result, then the expanded paths will be outlines only rather than filled and stroked. In addition, a snapshot of the tracing with its current display options is preserved and grouped with the expanded paths. The Tracing Options dialogue box will open. Since you can see the results live, it helps to play with the settings a bit to get used to what effect they have.

The way to think of the settings is that the left side Adjustments resembles Photoshop, and is conditioning the raster image before it is traced; the right side Trace Settings resembles Illustrator, and is taking the conditioned rasterized image and converting it to paths. When you are happy with the settings, be sure to first Save Preset. This is on the right of the Tracing Options dialogue box and will come in very handy if you need to make some other changes before tracing again.

In the above images you can see that I did some editing to my original trace. Some shapes were unwittingly grouped together, despite my efforts in Photoshop to keep them separate. Luckily, should this happen, there are a few easy solutions. It is easy to go back and quickly edit your image in Photoshop with a click of a button. It can now be instantly edited in Photoshop.

You can now use your preset to re-apply the trace in Illustrator.
